Physiotherapy exercises help people recover their functional abilities and overcome their injuries. These exercises target the lower back, knees and shoulders, among others. They help strengthen the muscles in these areas so that they won’t easily get pulled, strained or injured next time. But physiotherapy exercises aren’t just for athletes and sports enthusiasts. Even people with ordinary orthopedic disorders can enjoy their benefits since physiotherapy exercises aim to improve flexibility and expand the range of motion of an injured or debilitated individual.

Here are a few examples of physiotherapy exercises that you can try yourself.

Knee Exercises: The knee is probably the most prone to injuries. After all, it is connected to the feet and legs — two of the most extensively used body parts. To focus on the hamstring and quadriceps, try knee exercises like leg lifts and hamstring curls.

Shoulder Exercises: When there is a strain or tear in your trapezius, deltoid or rotator cuff, you can try the shoulder squeeze exercise. To do this, stand straight with your chest out and your hands at your side. Gently push back your shoulders and squeeze them together. Hold that position for ten counts then release.

Lower Back Exercises: When there’s pain in your lower back, try the cat stretch exercise — get down on all fours. Push your belly to the floor, lift your head and stare forward as if you’re a sphinx. Hold it for ten counts then release.
