What Is Outpatient Physical Therapy?

If you’re injured, coming out of a surgery, or just have a stiff neck, your physicians may send you to an outpatient physical therapy center. Physicians rely on physical therapists to provide a “hands on” approach to developing and helping to carry out a plan of care that promotes movement, reduces pain, restores function, and prevents disability. PTs work closely with the afflicted patient, their family members, and health care providers to meet the patient care goals, as well as ensure the patient’s results are optimal.

Outpatient Physical Therapy Center

An outpatient physical therapy center is just one of the many places you’ll find physical therapists. Outpatient centers are a common physical therapy setting that patients visit to meet with a physical therapist. This is often a clinic, office, or other health care facility. Unlike hospitals, hospices, or rehabilitation centers, there is no overnight stay at an outpatient center. It’s almost like a doctor’s office, except the focus is specifically to provide physical therapy for orthopedic and neuromuscular injuries and conditions.

At these centers, therapeutic exercise and functional training that are large parts of any physical therapist’s repertoire are performed. There’s myriad equipment and machines available for a physical therapist to use to help a patient’s body move in order to improve their strength, range of motion, and healing. Depending on the particular needs of a patient, physical therapists may use other techniques such as electrotherapy, ultrasound, heat or ice packs, and other treatments. Physical therapists use all these tools and techniques to combat loss of mobility and alleviate pain.

What Does a Physical Therapist Do?

A physical therapist examines a patient, analyzes their level of impairment, then creates, implements, and adjusts a plan of care. During a patient’s initial examination, a PT may want to test the patient’s muscle function, strength, flexibility, range of motion, balance, and more. After conducting these tests, and perhaps after a few physical therapy sessions, a PT can provide an estimate for when a patient will be able to return to work and which physical activities they may safely engage in. Physical therapy is an important part of recovery from a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions.
